Iyas La Salle National Writers Workshop in Bacolod City: Writing the Environment

In this 19-year old national writers workshop, young Filipino writers submit poetry, short stories, and plays in five languages: English, Filipino, Hiligaynon, Cebuano, and Kinaray-a. Sine 2017, the workshop theme focused on writing the environment. Hosted by the University of St. La Salle in Bacolod City, the writing faculty are from the network of De La Salle University's Bienvenido N. Santos Creative Writing Center. Funding support is given by the National Commission on Culture and the Arts (NCCA), and by the Institute of Climate and Sustainable Cities (ICSC).

Writing Residencies and Fellowships

International Writing Program, University of Iowa

In 2002, two Filipino writers were chosen by their peers to the International Writing Program in the University of Iowa: novelist Charlson Ong and me. The three-month fellowship was from August to November, with a side-trip to Hawaii for readings and lectures sponsored by the University of Hawaii in Manoa.

Bellagio Conference and Studies Center, Como, Italy

In 1992, Edna Zapanta Manlapaz and I were given a joint three-week writing residency at the Rockefeller Foundation's Bellagio Conference and Studies Center on Lake Como, Italy, to collaborate on the writing of our book "Six Women Poets: Inter/Views," later published by Aria Edition, Inc. Dr. Edna and I spent time in Rome after the residency at Casa LaSalle on Via Aurelia.

Hawthornden Castle International Retreat for Writers

In Spring of 1991, I was awarded a month-long residency at the Hawthornden Castle International Retreat for Writers to continue writing my second collection of poetry "with ease and decent peace." I was one of five writing residents and the only Asian.

Poetry Festivals

Poetry Parnassus, 2012 at the Southbank Centre, London

The poetry festival was the cultural aspect of the 2012 Olympics held in the U.K. and poets from countries participating in the Olympics sent one representative poet each. There were poetry readings and panel discussions at the Southbank Centre of London.

Festival Internacional de Poesia de Medellin, 2008

This is the longest-running poetry festival in South America directed be SeƱor Fernando Rendon. I attended the 18th edition of the festival in 2008, the second Filipino poet invited to the festival. Poets did public poetry readings in various places in Medellin and neighboring towns and cities. I was fortunate to travel to Bogota and proceed to Tunja, Colombia with four male poets to attend another poetry festival in the north of Colombia.

Philippine Literary Festival, 2020

The Book Development Association of the Philippines organized the 2020 Philippine Literary Festival on the theme "The Pandemic Playbook," and offered online panel discussions by writers as well as performances, which enabled readers to listen to authors talk about important matters related to writing and the responsibilities of writers in society in these precarious times of the pandemic. My panel on "A Writer's Map of Grief" was the first on the first day, with moderator Karina Bolasco and co-panelist Cathy Babao.
